Zion, IL. - On Monday, September 13, 2021 at 12:58 p.m. Zion Police Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at the Zion-Benton Township High School located at 3901 West 21st Street Zion, IL 60099.
We are pleased to report that after a school lockdown and thorough search, no injuries were reported. Initial reports indicated shots fired; however, no evidence to this point indicated this crime. Officers quickly learned of spent fireworks in the building.
This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic event. Officers from surrounding agencies responded as mutual aid and assisted with the safe containment and search of the building.
The lockdown procedure occurred just as we had practiced, and our students were safe in their classrooms during the incident.
Due to the strong collaboration between the Zion Police Department, Zion-Benton Township High School District 126, and surrounding police agencies, we hope to have a quick investigation and resolution to this incident.
We understand that this may have been a traumatic incident for your child or student. The Zion-Benton School staff are committed to the health and well-being of our students and encourage the use of the school counseling services if in need.
We thank you for your understanding and look forward to normal operations tomorrow.
