In this tech tip, I will show you how to make and modify Word Art.
Although word art isn’t the most professional looking, it is a vital part to knowing how to use Microsoft Word. There are also some pretty cool options that allow you to make Word Art look pretty spiffy.

First off, in order to make word art, you need text (the whole point of Word Art is to turn normal text into a 3D, colorful heading), so just type some text. I’m going to type ‘Word Art’ as a generic heading.

After typing your text that you want to be word art simply highlight the desired text and click on the word art button at the bottom of your screen (under the draw menu).

Word Art is cool!

After you press the word art button (circled above), a window will appear titled ‘Word Art Gallery’ (below). In this window you will select the style of word art that you want for your text.
Note: if you do not have the word art button on your screen, you need to go to view - toolbars - check ‘drawing’. Then the bar will appear at the bottom of your screen.

WordArt Gallery

In this window you need to select the style that you want your text to be, then press ‘OK’. Now a box will appear that asks you what you want the text to be, and what size you want it to be.

Edit WordArt Text

After clicking ‘OK’ your word art will appear in your document. Now you can move it around, change its appearances, edit it, etc…

Word Art

If you click on the little yellow diamond to the top left of the word art, you can drag it around to change the shape of the word art.
By dragging it inward, you make the top of the word art skinnier, if you drag it outward, you will make the top of the word art wider.

When the word art is selected (single click on it), an edit box will appear (seen above). In this box, you can make your word art look pretty neat.

Rotate Word Art

As you can see, I’ve edited the word art to make it look even cooler than before. I’ve used various buttons on the ‘word art’ box to change it’s colors, rotation, and angle of text.

Below, you can see how I applied a texture. I clicked on ‘fill color’ then ‘fill effects’. Then click on the ‘textures’ tab and you can take any picture you have on your computer and apply it as a texture.

As you can see below, I applied a picture of a cool drum set to fill as a texture inside the letters of my word art.

Another button you can click is the ‘3-D’ or ‘Shadow’ buttons (in the rectangle in the above picture). These will also give you more options to work with in your word art.

There are many buttons on the bottom ‘drawing’ toolbar that can be used with word art. There are tilt buttons (change the angle of your word art and make it look 3-D), there are lighting buttons, surface buttons, and more.

It’s fun to experiment with word art and see what you can come up with.
I hope you come up with some cool word art.
Enjoy!
