Anchors

Fprinter Friendly Version

This tech tip will teach you how to use anchors on your pages. Linking to these anchors will direct the user to a specific place on a page.

Anchors can be used in FAQ's, Table of Contents, or simply to refer to an item on a page. This is especially useful if you have a long page with many articles to refer back to a specific one rather than simply leaving it to the user to find it. If directed to an anchor, the text next to the anchor will be displayed on the top line of the page.

To create an anchor in Dreamweaver, there are two methods, the shortcut key and menu navigation. The shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+A. In the menu's, it's located in Insert > Named Anchor. You will have a dialogue box presented to you.

Anchor Name Dialogue Box

Simply enter the name of your anchor. Try to be as short as possible. Use numbers if you have to. It's simply for convenience and simplicity. Click OK and you will now have a little green anchor next to your text.

Now find the text you want linked to the anchor. To link to the anchor, the hyperlink must include the URL to the referring page. If it's the same page, the URL isn't required. After the URL the pound (#) is used to separate the page from the anchor's title. For example: if you have an anchor on http://www.socialism.net/page.htm called "intro", you would enter the link to the anchor as "http://www.socialism.net/page.htm#intro". Now the hyperlink will direct the user to that anchor on the page.
