Q:
What are the eligibility
and expectations of the Tech Academy?
A:
The Tech Academy is for
students who:
· will be incoming freshman
· are eligible to enroll in or have completed Algebra I or
higher
· are aware of and accept the financial commitment involved
· are willing to maintain a record of excellent attendance
· are interested in technology and computer applications
· work well with peers, in groups, and with staff
· will be caring and respectful of equipment, software, and
other related materials
· will strive for excellence and accept the responsibility
of maintaining a minimum grade point average of “C”
in order to remain in the Academy
Q:
OK, we’re interested. But what is the real
advantage of the Technology Academy?
A:
The Academy graduate
will be prepared for a
world
that most adults have never envisioned. With a solid basic education
that will prepare the student for college, the Tech Academy graduate
will also have immediate career options. American businesses are
recruiting young adults from other countries for high paying, technology
positions. Businesses in Lake County cannot find trained people
to fill technology positions. The Academy graduate will have numerous
educational and career options beyond what currently exist for high
school graduates.
Q:
My student is highly motivated and plans to enroll
in the Advanced Placement Pathway. Is the Tech Academy still possible?
A:
Yes and no. The
Academy is appropriate for
those
students who are motivated, responsible, and currently enrolled
in or have already successfully completed Algebra. There will be
opportunities to enroll in elective courses, such as Advanced Placement
(AP), outside of the Academy. However, students who plan to enroll
in two or more AP classes during the junior/senior years of high
school probably should not enroll in the Tech Academy. These students
will continue to have numerous technology/computer opportunities
at Z-BTHS.
Q:
$2,000 for a laptop computer seems like a great deal
of money. Why should we make this investment?
A:
This is an opportunity
to invest additional
resources
in the education of your student. When one views the cost of four
years of high school social activities--Homecoming, Prom, class
ring, etc.--$2,000 does not seem like much. Owning a laptop computer
means the entire family has access to this technology every day
of the year. The cost, when spread over four years, is only $1.37
per day, or less than $10.00 a week. The educational return on this
investment will be significantly greater. |
