ACADEMIC TEAM This group is open to all students interested in testing their academic/general knowledge skills while competing against other Conference Schools. A variety of questions include math, history, sports, languages, the arts, sciences, religion, technical fields and computers. This is an IHSA sanctioned activity. Zion Benton hosts (2) home meets and participates in (5) away meets, plus a conference meet. MEETS: Before and after school during the week CHOIRS The four Zion-Benton choirs sing at concerts at school and in the community. They participate in Winter and Spring Concerts, area and college festivals and school events. MEETS: Daily during school
CLASS OFFICERS Involvement of students elected by their respective school class to cultivate leadership/communication skills, promote school spirit, help plan safe and fun activities and fundraiser. Sponsors and officers encourage participation by other students interested in promoting class unity. MEETS: All year, 1-2 times/month before or school
ENCORE PLAYERS (Drama) Encore Players is made up of all students who are involved in Drama at ZBTHS. Encore Players is the producing group for all ZBTHS Drama Productions. Students who wish to join may contact Ms. Meyer in the Social Studies Department or simply try out for a play or one of the production crews. MEETS: After school, for the Fall, Winter & Spring productions.
EXCHANGE STUDENT PROGRAM This group is open to all students interested in helping to promote global awareness, to support exchange students and to encourage our students to become exchange students. MEETS: Special meetings with various activities
FENCING CLUB The Fencing Club is open to all students interested in learning more about the basic methods of fencing. This activity promotes fencing safety and basic techniques. MEETS: Twice per week
FRENCH CLUB French Club is an organization dedicated to promoting the French language and culture. Our regular meetings occur monthly, however others are scheduled as needed in order to plan and prepare activities which usually include: A welcome breakfast in the Fall and another in the Spring to welcome French exchange students, Fall picnic, Holiday Folk Fair in November, National French Contest, fundraising and trips to French restaurants, French language movies, and the Art Institute. MEETS: Monthly
GERMAN CLUB German Club gives students the chance to see and appreciate German culture in the area. Our meetings are twice a month, with activities happening on various evenings. Typical examples of activities are Kino Aberd (movie night), Holiday Folk Fair in Milwaukee, restaurant trips and Christkindelmarket in downtown Chicago. MEETS: Twice a month in the morning
HARAMBEE This group is open to any student interested in promoting racial unity. It is designed to educate and motivate students to work together, with the school and within the community. This group participates in several events, including a Black History program in February with hopes to become more active in community affairs. MEETS: Weekly on Thursday after school
HATT HATT (Hispanic Americans Talking Together) is a club that strives to create a sense of community among Latino students, to foster pride in self, school and cultural heritage. Meetings are held weekly. This group participates in several events, including a Hispanic Heritage Month program in October. Typical activities include a trip to the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in Chicago and a Cinco de Mayo event. MEETS: Weekly
HEALTHY YOUTH Healthy YOUth is an organization that combines Operation Snowball and Teens Against Tobacco Use. Our focus is on promoting a drug-free school and community. We teach 5th and 6th grade students about the dangers of tobacco use, and we teach 7th and 8th grade students about the dangers of alcohol, marijuana and inhalants. We also sponsor Red Ribbon Week, Kick Butts Day, The Great American Smoke-Out, and activity nights for junior high school students. Students are required to fill out an application, be accepted into the program, and attend a training session at the beginning of the school year in order to join the group. Applications are available in the IMC. MEETS: TBD
HOMECOMING Student committee formed to generate school spirit and plan the activities and dance during the annual Homecoming Week. The committee plans spirit week, court voting, pep assembly, dance and fundraising efforts. MEETS: Fall, 10-12 times after school
JAZZ BAND Jazz Band is open to any student grades 9-12 through audition and/or Director promotion. In addition to participating in all marching band activities, including the Labor Day Parade, all home football games and basketball games, the Jazz Band will also perform two jazz concerts, the Fine Arts Festival, Parent Bee Coffeehouse, various festivals and competitions throughout the year. Members will also perform with the Symphonic Band in the Winter and Spring Band Concerts. Auditions for Jazz Ensemble will occur by semester and may require student fees. MEETS: Band Room
KEY CLUB Open to all students wishing to be involved in service oriented activities. Key Club works with the Zion Kiwanis Club on projects designed to promote a better school, community and country. One special project is the Blood Drive in February. They also hold fundraisers, support work at Midwest Regional Hospital, the Literacy Walk, and many other service projects within our community. MEETS: Executive Board meets the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Lecture Hall
MOCK TRIAL CLUB Mock Trial Club is open to all students who are interested in learning more about how our judicial system operates. This activity promotes leadership and teamwork. The team will compete with other local high schools, also in the Lake County 19th Judicial Court contests with an opportunity to advance and compete at the state level. MEETS: 2-3 times per week
MOSAICS Participating in Mosaics give students an opportunity to share in editing and decision-making regarding the school literary magazine. There is a place for poets, songwriters, artists, fiction writers, and photographers, as well as, printers and publishers. MEETS: Bi-monthly
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Open to students who have been selected for membership by a faculty vote on the basis of their high levels of leadership, scholarship, service and character. They participate in tutoring, service activities and fundraisers. MEETS: Every other Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. in the Lecture Hall
NJROTC – DRILL TEAM A military drill team composed of 20-30 NJROTC cadets that compete throughout the year against other military drill teams in the Midwest. National competition is conducted in Pensacola, Florida and Daytona Beach, Florida. The team is composed of armed and unarmed platoons that perform basic and exhibition drills. All Drill Team members are in the NJROTC program. MEETS: Daily from 1445-1600 (2:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.) at various locations.
NJROTC – ORIENTEERING TEAM Orienteering is an outdoor sport that combines land navigation with a treasure hunt. Popular in Europe, the Chicago Area Orienteering Club (CAOC) has many members who have competed nationally as well as internationally. The Orienteering team competes with CAOC every Sunday in the forest preserves in the south Chicago area. Although the CAOC courses are open to the public, all members of the NJROTC team are in the ROTC program. MEETS: Sundays from 0900-1430 (9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p .m.) at various forest areas. Each activity meets with 18-22 cadets.
NJROTC – RIFLE TEAM A Nationally ranked Air Rifle Team composed of NJROTC cadets. The team competes in three leagues and shoots against Army, Navy and Marine Corps teams throughout the Nation. The team has been the Illinois State Champion for the past three years. All members are issued a personal rifle. Team members attend Olympic Summer camps and shoot in the Junior Olympics National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. All Rifle team members are in the NJROTC program. MEETS: Daily at the rifle range in Pearce Campus from 1500-1700 (3 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)
NOR’EASTER Students are involved in the production of the yearbook. Responsibilities and skills developed include photography, writing copy and meeting publisher’s deadlines. New ideas are always welcome. Students need not be enrolled in yearbook class to be involved! Amateur photographers welcome! Send us your photos! Get involved and join us! MEETS: Daily during school and twice per week after school as needed.
PROJECT P.R.I.D.E. The Project P.R.I.D.E. program allows students to acquire extra support in achieving goals during high school. Adult mentors work with the students focusing on motivation, participation and academic achievement while gaining “success” in the classroom. Teachers and counselors recommend students for this program. Students will participate in special projects on campus during regular school hours, as well as, field trips outside the area. MEET: All year
PROM Committee of Junior Class Officers and other interested Junior’s formed to plan the Prom Style Show and the Prom Dance. This committee also helps raise funds for prom and conducts the prom court election. MEET: Several times per month beginning in January, once per week in the Spring
ROBOTICS TEAM The Robotics Team is open to all students who are interested in learning about the latest in today’s technology. Competition is held in the spring sponsored by Abbott Labs. MEETS: Afterschool
SHADES SHADES is a “Multicultural Club” that celebrates the diversity of Zion-Benton’s student population. The club sponsors various activities during March (Multicultural Month) such as dance, music and food festivals. During meetings members are free and open to discuss issues of prejudice, tolerance, discrimination and school climate concerns. MEETS: 3 days per month and other various days (often held on Thursday) in Room 309
SPANISH CLUB Spanish Club breakfast, Fall picnic, Spanish Movies, National Spanish Contest, just a few of the highlights of the Spanish Club. The purpose is to meet other students taking Spanish at Z-B and enjoy practice-speaking Spanish, tasting Mexican and Spanish cuisine. A great way to have lots of fun. MEETS: Monthly
SPEECH TEAM The Speech/Forensics team gives students the opportunity to enhance their oratorical skills through a variety of events. Students have the choice of practicing and performing in both dramatic and non-dramatic speaking events. They compete in several IHSA tournaments each season, which culminate in February at the State tournament in Springfield. MEETS: Before and after school for practice during the season.
STINGER Students are involved both in the classroom and after school to produce an accurate, entertaining newspaper for the school. They gather information, take pictures, write stories and use state-of-the-art computer programs to create this monthly paper. MEETS: Daily during school
SWARM SWARM (ZB Spirit Club) promotes school pride, unity and spirit. SWARM sponsors theme nights and attendance at school activities. Activities include attending sporting events and a “white-out” of the event, with students wearing their white SWARM t-shirt. MEETS: Officers meet weekly
THESPIANS The International Thespian Society is an honorary organization for high school drama students. Troupe 1987 is involved in three plays, a banquet and the Fine Arts Festival. MEETS: All year (Monday-Thursday)
VICA VICA is an annual competition open to all Vocational and Technical students who compete annually in February/March for the state level competitions. MEETS: During school hours
WEIGHTLIFTING CLUB MEETS: Before or After School as designated
Z-B GUARDS Students who have had experience in swim team, teaching lessons, lifeguarding class, water safety instructor classes or interest in Aquatics. We need volunteers to act as lifeguards and swimming instructor aids for P.E. classes. If you are enrolled in a P.E. class you are eligible to earn your P.E. credit if you volunteer. If you are in study hall and would like to help, you can receive recognition for community service and school service that looks great on college applications. MEETS: During P. E. Classes
Z-B WEBCREW WebCrew is an extra curricular program utilizing student led projects designing and maintaining professional websites, including our own Z-B website. Students willing to learn are recruited and trained, exploring the latest in computer technology, preparing them for the real world Internet design via “hands on” and classroom training. MEETS: Throughout the day and after school
Z-B TECH CREW ZB Tech crew is the “behind the scenes” activity of all ZB theatre productions. We are always looking for students who want to learn how to work back stage. We will teach you how to construct, paint, light school productions, work with all the tools as well as learn the language of the theatre. It is also a great group to make good friends. MEETS: Daily after school during play productions at the Pearce Campus Theatre
Z-BTV ZBTV students video high school and community events, assist Lake County producers with their shows, and write, storyboard, tape, and edit original programming for Channel 19 the Zion/Winthrop Harbor Public Cable access channel. MEETS: All Year (2-3 times a week)
