S. SCHULTE (RET) Commander Steven Schulte is a 1982 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Resources Management and earned three varsity letters in baseball. After completing flight training, Commander Schulte was designated a Naval Aviator in December 1983. Following qualification in the P-3C Orion aircraft, his first operational flying tour was with VP-4 in Barbers Point, Hawaii where he made three deployments to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Alaska. He next was assigned as a flight instructor with VP-31 in Moffett Field, California where he served as Pilot NATOPS Officer and Pilot Evaluator for all West Coast P-3 squadrons. Commander Schulte next served as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer and V-2 Division Officer aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) where he participated in Operation Desert Storm during ABRAHAM LINCOLN's initial deployment in 1990. He next completed a Department Head tour with VP-4 where he served as Administrative Officer and Maintenance Officer. During this tour, VP-4 was awarded the GOLDEN WRENCH AWARD for maintenance excellence. Following his Department Head tour, Commander Schulte was assigned as Assistant Chief of Staff for Maintenance on the staff of Commander Patrol Wings Pacific in Barbers Point, Hawaii. After selection for Command in 1997, Commander Schulte earned a Master of Science degree in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where he was selected for the RADM McClellan Award for academic excellence and the American Society of Military Comptrollers Award and Conrad Scholar Award for excellence in graduate level research. Commander Schulte reported to Navy Recruiting District Chicago as Executive Officer in August 1999, and as Commanding Officer in February 2001. Upon completion of his command tour at NRD Chicago, CDR Schulte reported to Commander Patrol Wing Fifty Seven as Patrol and Reconnaissance Officer on the Joint Task Force Southwest Asia staff in Saudi Arabia where he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his retirement in August 2003, CDR Schulte accepted the position of Senior Naval Science Instructor at Zion-Benton Township High School. Commander Schulte's personal awards include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal.
