MASTER CHIEF MACHINIST MATE
(SURFACE WARFARE SPECIALIST)

Master Chief Hackstein was born on 26 December 1963 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He joined the Navy on 26 January 1982 and completed Recruit Training in San Diego, Ca.

His duty assignments include: USS Gray (FF-1054); USS Schofield (FFG-3); Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois; USS Badger (FF-1071); USS Harold E. Holt (FF1074); Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois; USS Cleveland (LPD-7), Recruit Training Command Great Lakes; Illinois and CMC of Naval Station Great Lakes.

His awards include: Navy Commendation Medal (second award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (third award), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy ”E” (fourth award), Navy Good Conduct Medal (fourth award), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment ribbon (second award), Expert Rifle Medal. Master Chief Hackstein has also earned the designation of Master Training Specialist and is a graduate on the Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy (class 81).

Master Chief Hackstein retired from active duty 30 June 2002 and entered the Navy Junior ROTC program. He spent a little more than a year at Whitney Young Magnet High School in Chicago before joining Zion Benton’s NJROTC team.

Master Chief Hackstein resides with his wife and children in Rochester, Wisconsin.
