THE BOOSTER'S STORY The Athletic Boosters have been such a vital part of the culture of Zion-Benton Township High School that it’s easy to forget the origins of this group. Zion Benton’s first athletic booster club was created in 1957. In 1957, the board of education had to eliminate the funding of athletics because of financial constraints on the district. A number of community members who did not want to see Zion Benton lose their sports teams came together to create the Athletic Boosters Club to privately fund some limited (five) varsity-only sports. When school financing improved in 1960, funding for athletics was reinstated and the booster club dissolved. However, Zion-Benton was struggling athletically. The limited progress in the preceding years had put the Zee-Bees at a competitive disadvantage. Therefore, the booster club was re-established in 1968 with a slightly different focus. The boosters were now trying to fund more grandiose projects to try and make our programs “first class.” Contributions from booster members have taken many forms, from time, money, equipment, labor boosters have been and continue to be a “first class” organization dedicated to the improvement of athletic facilities and the athletes themselves.
